At Levant, a single moment of curiosity can spark a week of rich, interconnected learning. When children discovered a caterpillar in the garden, this simple question: “What is this?” became the foundation for an interdisciplinary project.
Science: Observing the caterpillar, creating life cycle charts, setting up a habitat, and learning about metamorphosis.
Literacy: Reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar, writing stories with creative twists, journaling reflections, and expanding vocabulary.
STEM/Maths: Measuring toy caterpillars, graphing insect sizes, and designing a butterfly habitat.
ICT: Using tablets to research butterfly species, creating simple animations of the life cycle, and presenting digital versions of their projects.
PSED (Personal, Social, and Emotional Development): Working in teams to care for the caterpillar habitat, sharing resources, and presenting learning to classmates, building confidence and collaboration.
Physical Development: Gardening, planting flowers, and engaging in hands-on craftwork like cutting, threading, and building butterfly wings.
Art & Creativity: Crafting caterpillars and butterflies, decorating wings with symmetry, and presenting their creations in a class exhibition.
By the end of the week, children had not only mastered their learning objectives but also experienced how science, literacy, maths, technology, creativity, and wellbeing come together in joyful, meaningful learning.
